Organic Natural Baby Soap Recipe

15 oz. Organic Olive oil

5 oz. Organic Palm oil

5 oz. Organic Coconut oil

3.3 oz. Lye

8 oz. Water

You can choose to add organic baby food oatmeal (about cup) to your recipe or you can leave it out. Baby food oatmeal is very smooth unlike regular oatmeal or even finely blended oatmeal.

You can keep the soap free of any fragrance or you can add Lavender Essential Oil. Lavender Essential Oil is frequently added to baby items because of its calming effect. Essential Oils are natural versus a fragrance oil which is synthetic. I would avoid a fragrance oil or you will not have organic natural baby soap. You would need about 1 oz. of Essential Oil.

This recipe makes 8 – 4 oz. bars of soap. If you wish to make more or less you can change the recipe amounts, but please double check your ingredient amounts with a lye calculator. I personally think it is easier to make a bigger batch (like twice or quadruple this amount) rather than a smaller amount.

Homemade recipes for carpet shampoo can save money while helping you to keep your floors clean. As with commercial carpet shampoos you should test a small inconspicuous area first to make sure you aren’t going to stain or damage the carpet – this is very important! Different carpets are made with varying materials and cleaning solutions work differently on each kind of carpet fiber. There are many different recipes for homemade carpet shampoo and various cleaning tips using household items instead of shampoo. Some recipes work better on one type of stain than another.

When your carpet does get soiled it is important to remove as much of the matter immediately. For wet messes you should blot the carpet dry with paper toweling as soon as possible. Dry messes should be picked up and swept or vacuumed up immediately. Once you have picked up the mess as much as possible you can use one of the following cleaning solutions.

Homemade Recipes for Carpet Shampoo

General Recipes

Club soda will work for many stains, after blotting the stain soak with club soda and blot until the stain is gone.

A mixture of one part borax and two parts baking soda or corn starch can be used to clean up messes in carpets. After cleaning the mess with paper toweling as well as you can, sprinkle the borax mixture liberally and rub in to remove stains and odors. Allow to stand for an hour then vacuum clean.

For use in carpet cleaning machines a mixture of liquid soap (castile soap, dish soap, or laundry soap all will work) and vinegar. Use one tablespoon each of vinegar and liquid soap for each quart of water. This can also be put in a spray bottle to be applied directly to the carpet.

A mixture of one part liquid laundry soap (non-bleach type) and one part liquid fabric softener and six parts water can be used to clean and deodorize carpets. This can be put in a spray bottle and applied directly to the carpet or you can use this in your carpet cleaning machine.

Ink Stains

As soon as you notice an ink stain you should attempt to blot up excess ink without smearing it into the rest of the carpet. Cream of Tartar and lemon juice will remove ink. First sprinkle cream of tartar onto the ink stain then add a couple drops of lemon juice and rub gently, taking care not to smear the stain into the rest of the carpet. Once the stain disappears vacuum the excess cream of tartar.

Isopropyl alcohol can remove ink stains. Use in a well ventilated area. Pour the alcohol onto the stain and gently blot until the ink disappears. Take care not to smear the ink into other areas of the carpet while removing the original stain.

Blood

Cold water works best on blood stains, especially if you can treat the stain immediately. Club soda works well also.

Hydrogen peroxide will remove blood stains from your carpet and from clothing. You can pour peroxide directly on the stain and it will bubble up and disappear. Rinse well with clear water.

Grease/Oily Stains

Baking soda or corn starch can remove grease/oily stains. First remove as much of the oil (use paper towels and throw them away if possible) then sprinkle either baking soda or corn starch liberally over the soiled area. Rub in and leave overnight to give enough time for the oils to be absorbed. Vacuum the residue the next day.

It is possible to damage your carpet so you should always treat a very small inconspicuous area to test any treatment before using on the whole carpet.

What’s the appeal of the soap making procedure? Commercial soaps are usually drying and many are actually synthetic detergents. Hand-crafted soap will work better. It has a special, moisturizing luxury feel. Plus you have the option of customizing it with different ingredients … especially scents in literally infinite variety.

This gives you a basic soap making procedure with a recipe to put it all together.

Our specialty is milk soap. We made over 30,000 bars of soap like this in our kitchen sink over a four-year period. We sold all that soap at craft shows and festivals and through our own catalog. Though you can make soap using water instead of milk, you’ll like the milk soap better … guaranteed!!! This recipe will work with water instead of the milk.

Lightly Lavender Milk Soap Recipe

11.3 ounces (320 grams) Coconut Oil

11.7 ounces (330 grams) Palm Oil

19.4 ounces (550 grams) Olive Oil

6.1 ounces (175 grams) Sodium Hydroxide

15.5 ounces (440 grams) Whole Milk

2 1/3 Tablespoons Lavender Essential Oil

1 Tablespoon Olive Oil ( or almond oil )

Now for some “inside information”. To make any soap, you mix fats and an alkali or lye. All soap is made that way. The cured product is harmless. You can brush your teeth with it. You can even eat it. It won’t hurt you! The correct soap making procedure insures that.

But the lye and the uncured soap mixture are very caustic. It will burn your skin. It will blind you if it gets in your eyes! You absolutely must wear goggles when you make soap and it’s best to wear rubber gloves and long sleeves too.

Equipment You’ll Need

2 Stainless Steel Pans

1 Plastic Pan

Rubber Spatula

Thermometer (90-200 degree F Range)

Scale For Weighing Material

Molds For Soap (Plastic Tub?)

Hand Held Stick Blender (Optional)

The Step-by-Step Soap Making Procedure

1. Weigh oils and combine in stainless steel pan.

2. Heat slowly until everything melts. Cool to about 110 degrees. Do not include the scent oil or the small amount of olive oil.

3. Weigh lye in a plastic container. Remember the gloves and goggles.

4. Weigh milk and pour into a separate stainless steel pan.

5. Put 2-3 inches of water in your sink and add ice cubes. Put your pan with milk into ice water.

6. Slowly pour the lye into the milk. Take twenty minutes to do this, stirring all the while. Monitor the milk temperature and keep it below 150 degrees so it doesn’t burn. When all the lye is added, let the mixture cool until it is 110 degrees.

7. Add the lye/milk mixture to the oils, stirring while you do so; now stir the soap mixture until it begins to gel. It’s time to stop stirring when a thin stream of soap drizzled on top of the soap

mixture lays on top. This is called tracing. If stirring by hand this may take 45 minutes. To speed things up the trick is to use your hand blender to stir the soap for 30 seconds, let it rest for a minute and repeat until it traces.

8. Add scent oils and the extra olive oil.

9. Pour into prepared molds. Let sit for 24 hours. Remove from molds. Cut into bars and set aside to cure for 4 weeks.

This is the basic soap making procedure. Lots of natural soap making books are out there, but most of them make it so complicated that it’s tough to get going. Even if you consult some of those books, you can come back to these instructions for the basics. Give this recipe a try. You’ll be pleased with the results.
