Rich in essential fatty acids, almond oil also contains several vitamins that improve your skin’s health. Almond oil also adds a great lathering quality to your soap. You can choose a recipe that uses almond oil as the main oil, or one that uses it as a trace oil. Either way, this oil is great for all types of skin and will make your soap feel wonderful.

When preparing your homemade soap recipe, make sure you follow all safety precautions and use the right equipment. Lye and uncured soap is caustic to the skin and will blind you if you get it in your eyes. Always err on the side of caution. Once your soap is cured, it is completely safe for your skin.

Use safety measures to avoid splashing. Stir the mixture until it traces. Tracing means that when the soap has reached the consistency where it will leave a trail before disappearing back into the mixture when it is drizzled back on itself. If you have a stick blender, this will speed up this process.

If you are using any essential oils or fragrance oils, this is the time to add them. You may also add a bit of almond oil at this stage if you wish. It is an excellent oil to use after the trace stage to superfat your soap. Superfatting allows the oil to remain in its natural state, making it instantly available to your skin when using the soap. Stir well, and then pour the soap into molds to cure.

A homemade soap recipe based on almond oil might consist of something like this for a one pound batch:

• 6.4 ounces of sweet almond oil
• 3.2 ounces of coconut oil
• 1.6 ounces of grape seed oil
• 1.6 ounces of lanolin oil
• 3.2 ounces of shea butter
• 2.2 ounces of lye (sodium hydroxide)
• 5.7 ounces of water
• 0.2 ounces of sweet almond oil added at trace for superfatting

Making soap with almond oil is a great way to moisturize and care for your skin without all the additives you get from commercial brands. With a little caution, you’ll soon find out how fun it can be to make your own soap. Your skin and your family will thank you for it! Ingredients can be found online and in an afternoon you can whip up a batch. After it is cured, you’ll wonder why you ever washed with anything else.
