How to Make Soap – Recipe for Savings

When looking to make homemade soap you may be persuaded by one of four end goals and this article will describe how making soap yourself can fulfill each of these end goals. You may be out to make soap for one or more of these reasons including saving money, being environmentally friendly, as a hobby and lesson for your and potentially even your children, and for having control over the ingredients.

You can save money by making your own soap because you can smartly pick the ingredients to ensure you are keeping costs down. You can find soap making recipes that allow you to use cheaper ingredients. This is probably one of the weaker points justifying making soap as commercial soap is rather cheap but nonetheless you may be able to make it cheaper with some smart choices.

In having control over the ingredients you can also make environmentally conscious choices. This way you can know with certainty that you are making environmentally friendly and biodegradable soap.

Your third potential motivation could be as a hobby and way to pass time. Best of all you can use making soap as a learning lesson for your children.

Having control over the ingredients has a benefit in addition to being environmentally friendly. You can also make therapeutic soaps in this way by adding ingredients such as aloe and oatmeal.

Have Fun While Battling Tough Times – Teach Your Kids How To Make Soap

Even in these tough times and perhaps even more so it is incredibly important to ensure your children are provided with fun and engaging activities that provide them with important life skills. Without such fun activities for them to participate they will lead into activities that can either get them in trouble or that do no benefit whatsoever in terms of developing them into successful adults. If in teaching them these activities you can also teach them the importance of living within a financial responsible framework and you can keep these activities under a low budget then you this will be even better.

One area where you can really teach your kids and participate in fun and educational activities with them is in making various products that are either useful around the house or useful to wear. One such activity that can be really fun is to show them how to make soap. You can teach them all sorts of skills. You can teach your younger children Internet and research skills by going online to find soap making recipes. In making the soap they can learn to follow directions and you can teach them various physics and chemistry principles in making soap as you proceed. Best of all you can teach them sustainable living and living within their means. This is a very fun and cheap activity to participate in with your children.

I found this informative article on melt and pour soap making instructions for beginners and thought you might enjoy it. It contains a lot of great information and will really help anyone just getting started with their soap making.

For more instruction on soap making, take a look at this detailed resource aimed at beginners. It will propell you to expert status in no time.

Soap Making for Beginners — Melt and Pour

Soap making has been around for ages. The process of making soaps can either be simple or complex, depending on what you want to make. You can make soaps as a way to make money or you can make soaps for personal use or as gifts.

Keep in mind that soap making can be dangerous, as soaps become very hot when melted during the melt and pour soap making process. Soap making should be fun and entertaining, but it is also important to practice all necessary safety precautions when making soaps.

Always wear rubber gloves and eye protection. It is also a good idea to keep your safety equipment on at all times even after you have removed the soap from the mold. This is because melted soap takes a long time to cool.

To start making soaps, you have to get to know the basic ingredients in handmade soaps. Handmade soaps are generally made from glycerin. You can buy glycerin soap at your local hobby store. There are many types of glycerin soaps that you can melt and pour into your own handmade soaps. They also have different properties and benefits for your skin.

Here are some examples of glycerin soap:

* Hemp Glycerin Soap

* Olive Oil Soap

* Clear Glycerin Soap

* Goat Milk Glycerin Soap

The good thing about the melt and pour soap making method is that all the equipments you need can be found in your own house. You can use either your double broiler or your microwave oven for melting soaps.

It is important to remember to keep the bowl containing the soap base covered when using the microwave. This is to prevent the melted soap base from splattering out of the bowl in the microwave oven and to keep the excess moisture from evaporating.

When using the microwave, melt the soap base for one minute in high temperature, stirring in the remaining unmelted soap pieces until those have melted too.

If you prefer to use the double broiler, you should first bring the water to a boil then add your soap base of choice to the boiling water, cover the pot and set the fire on low. Keep in mind that this method will take some time. The soap base may take as long as 10 minutes to melt. Stirring occasionally will also ensure an even melt.

You can also add some optional ingredients:

* You can add fragrance to your soaps. You can buy your choice of fragrance oil in your local hobby store. Keep in mind that the fragrance oil should be completely mixed in so that the soap will not have a cloudy appearance.

* You can also add your color preference when making soaps. You can use mica or food coloring for it. When using food coloring, you should start by adding one drop at a time and mixing it thoroughly until you reach your color preference.

After the soap base has melted, pour it into individual molds, tray molds, or blocks, which can then be sliced. You can also be creative and design your own soap mold to create soaps of various shapes and sizes.

Creating your own handmade soap by the melt and pour soap making process can be fun and an inexpensive process. It also makes great gifts for family and friends.

All the soap making oils need to be mixed together and then heated on the stove. When measuring out each oil, it’s important to weigh with the scale rather than use liquid measurements. It’s critical to measure accurately for good results.

The video demonstrates the use of these popular soap making oils:

Coconut oil – You may want to microwave it for a few seconds to soften it up. That makes it easier to remove from it’s container.

Cocoa butter – This comes in solid form and needs to be shaved off and weighed in the appropriate amount.

Canola oil – Be sure to use a scraper to get all of this into the mixture. Small drops can be significant if left out.

Bee’s wax – This also needs to be shaved with a knife and/or grater.

All ingredients should be poured into a large cooking pot made of either stainless steel or ceramic. Heat on the stove at a very low setting. Stir until everything melts together. Once the soap making oils mixture has melted down into small chunks, you can turn off the stove.

So, you’re finally ready to start your soap making journey and might be wondering how to make lye soap the old fashioned way. First off, you have to get all the necessary soap making supplies ready which include a couple of gallons of water, around 10 ounces of lye and 5 lbs of beef fat. Note that the amount of lye depends on the kind of fat you use.

The three ingredients mentioned above are used in making all kinds of lye soap. The only difference is in the kind of fat and quantity of water used in making it. To start with, you have to cut the fat into a cubical shape with around one-inch dimensions. If you’re using fat from meat you’re cooking yourself, simply trim away the fat and let it continue to cook after the meat is done.

After the fat is thoroughly cooked and all the grease is eliminated from it, you have to twist the solid part that’s left. It’s really important to be careful while cooking fat, as burning it will reduce the quality of your soap. The use of cheesecloth during this process can help a lot.

Once the fat cubes are ready, measure 5 pounds of solid fat using a scale and put it in an iron melting pot. Then, pour the water gradually into the pot along with the fat and cook until the mixture looks blended. Once completely blended, add the lye carefully, keeping in mind that it’s an alkali and can easily burn the skin and eyes if you’re not careful. Be sure to follow all safety precautions such as wearing goggles and gloves, too.

From this point on, avoid using any aluminum tools or utensils because the lye will have an acidic effect and might cause damage to your skin. Your mixture of fat and water should look like a single solution without any separation of oil. When it does, add 10 ounces of lye and stir in slowly using a wooden tool.

You should notice the saponification happening and small bubbles rising above the surface of the mixture. At this point, boil the mixture for a minimum of 30 minutes up to an hour. It’s essential to boil slowly and remember to stir the mixture from time to time.

Finally, you should have a thick and creamy soap mixture ready to be poured into your chosen molds. Using a wooden paddle, pour the thick cream into your molds and allow them to set for a couple of days before cutting into bars. Best of all, once you understand the basics of how to make lye soap, you’ll want to start experimenting with different types of oils, colorings and fragrances too.

Fats and oils used for lye soap making recipe:

Olive oil

Castor oil

Coconut oil

Coconut butter

Bees wax

The above ingredients are mixed together in a pot. Then, some finishing touches are added:

Apricot kernel oil

Buttermilk powder

Finely ground oatmeal

Soap making lye precautions you need to be aware of:

Remember to practice safety first when working with lye. It can be dangerous and needs to be handled with a lot of care. Follow these safety steps at a minimum:

Wear goggles to protect your eyes. Be sure they have side shields so that your eye area is completely covered.

Wear rubber or latex gloves to protect your hands and long sleeves for your arms.

Keep children and pets out of your work area as it is especially dangerous to have them around the lye.

In the event you happen to get any lye on your skin, neutralize it right away with some vinegar. Then, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

It’s also important to wash all pots and pans used in the lye soap making process before touching them with bare hands. They can burn your skin. It may be a good idea to designate certain kitchen items as exclusively for soap making. You can keep a separate soap making kit with all your tools in it together.
